So Vitruvius was really (1500 years) ahead in the architecture game. Because think of the fact that the next major book on architecture, Leon Battista Alberti's “ De re aedificatoria” or “ On the Art of Building” was not written until 1452! And Alberti only expanded on the writing of Vitruvius … Also, one of Leonardo da Vinci's best known drawings, the Vitruvian Man, is based on the principles of body proportions developed by Vitruvius in the first chapter of Book III, On Symmetry: In Temples And In The Human Body. Through his treatises, he aimed to provide Emperor Caesar Augustus with personal insight into the quality of building.Įmperor Augstus should have been happy with this. Vitruvius dedicated his life's work to understanding the principles of building design and construction. His work is the only surviving major book on architecture from classical antiquity (the period of cultural history between the 8th century BC and the 5th century AD). He was an architect and engineer in ancient Rome. 2000 years ago Marcus Vitruvius Pollio better known as “Vitruvius” wrote the book “De architectura, libri decem” known today as “ The Ten Books on Architecture”.
